The 2024 General Election made one thing clear: Britain stands at a crossroads. Every major party recognised the need to revitalise the economy and deliver sustainable growth and prosperity across the nation. Despite acknowledging the urgent need and historic opportunity presented by the transition to a greener economy, the new government risks falling behind other countries without decisive action now.
To achieve its goals for the economy and for the climate, the government must focus on greening the financial system. This is essential to address the climate and nature crisis, build resilience, and unlock private investment – all pivotal for the UK’s long-term success.
In a new joint briefing, 15 organisations have come together to urge the new government to prioritise green finance, demonstrating to the world how to finance a just transition to a thriving low-carbon economy.
We put forward ambitious but achievable recommendations for how the government can: :
- Set out an Ambitious Plan for Green Growth identifying where finance is needed and how it can be mobilised to drive green growth.
- Leverage Financial Sector Policy and Regulatory Reform to promote green investment and end unsustainable financing.
- Focus Public Institutions on delivery of climate and nature goals.
See the list of recommendations underpinning these areas in the full report.
